Private Chef, Boat Day, Cinema Night: What Crete's Villa Extras Cost

The villa is booked. The flights are booked. And then, somewhere around week three of planning, the second wave arrives: should we get a chef in one night? Is a boat day worth it? What about that outdoor cinema thing?

The frustrating part is that almost nobody publishes a price. You send an enquiry, you wait two days, you get a number, and by then you have already half-committed emotionally. So here is the honest version — what the common villa extras cost in Crete in 2026, roughly what you get for the money, and how we would spend it if the budget only stretched to one or two.

The private chef

Expect roughly €60 to €120 per person, and that figure normally includes the food, the cooking, the serving and the clearing up. Chef Crete, who work out of Rethymno, publish exactly that range, and it matches what most operators quote once you press them.

What moves the number is menu complexity more than headcount. A relaxed Cretan mezze evening sits at the bottom of the range. A four-course tasting menu with matched wines sits at the top. Villas in remote spots can attract a travel supplement, so ask about it upfront rather than discovering it on the invoice.

For a family of six, then, you are looking at somewhere between €360 and €720 for one evening. That is real money, and it is worth being clear-eyed about what you get: an exceptional dinner, no washing-up, and about three hours of your evening. It is a wonderful thing on the first or last night. It is an expensive habit by night four.

The boat day

This one has the widest range of anything on the list, because "a boat" covers everything from a small self-drive rib to a crewed catamaran with a skipper and lunch.

At the entry end, listings on the major charter platforms start around €250 to €300 for a day on a modest boat, and in some cases you can skipper it yourself if you hold the right licence. A crewed private boat with a skipper for a family group is more commonly a €600 to €1,200 day. Anything described as a yacht charter with a hostess and catering runs well beyond that.

Worth knowing before you book: the meltemi wind is at its strongest in July and August, and boat days get cancelled or cut short more often than brochures admit. Ask what the operator's weather policy is, and ask it in writing. A day at sea in a stiff northerly is not the day anybody pictured.

The cinema night

This is ours, so treat the enthusiasm accordingly — but we publish our prices for exactly the reason this article exists, and you can check them yourself.

A Family Movie Night is €450. That covers the whole thing: we arrive in the afternoon, set up the screen, projector and sound wherever the view is best, style the seating with lounge beds, blankets and lanterns, and stay on site through the evening so nobody has to think about cables. You choose the film. Everything is packed away the same night, so the terrace is exactly as you left it in the morning.

From there it scales. Starlight for Two is €690 for a couples' evening. The Gathering is €850 for a bigger party with festoon lighting and a drinks station. The Proposal is €1,250 and The Premiere — red carpet, canapés, a photographer for the first hour — is €1,950. Add-ons like a popcorn station (€50) or a Cretan grazing board (€45) sit on top.

All we need from the villa is access to a power outlet.

What we would actually book, and in what order

If you have one extra evening's budget for a family holiday, we would spend it on whatever the children will still describe in October. That is usually not the tasting menu.

If you have two, take a chef on the last night and something memorable in the middle of the week. The last night is when a chef earns their fee, because everybody is relaxed, nobody wants to drive, and the meal becomes the send-off.

If you have three, add the boat — but book it early in the stay, so a weather cancellation can be moved rather than lost.

And whatever you book, book it before you fly. Crete's good chefs, skippers and suppliers are taken for most of July and August by May. The single most common message we receive begins "I know this is short notice", and the honest answer, in peak season, is too often that it is.
