October half term is 26–30 October for most English schools. The sea is still 23–24°C — but the water parks have shut. What is genuinely open in Crete that week, and which families should book the Canaries instead.
October half term in England falls on Monday 26 to Friday 30 October for most schools in 2026, breaking up on Friday the 23rd and back on Monday the 2nd. Dates shift by council and academy trust — Leicestershire goes a week earlier, several others wobble by a few days — so check yours before you book anything.
If Crete is on the list for that week, this is the honest version: what still works, what has quietly shut for the winter, and who should book somewhere else entirely.
Late October in Crete is not a gamble in the way people assume.
| North coast | South coast | |
|---|---|---|
| Daytime highs | 19–25°C | 22–27°C |
| Sea temperature | 23–24°C | 23–24°C |
| Rainy days in the month | around 6 | around 4 |
Those are month-wide averages and the back half of October is cooler than the front, so treat them as the shape rather than a forecast. But the sea is the headline: 23 or 24 degrees is warmer than the English Channel manages in August. Children will swim happily. Adults will complain for about ninety seconds and then get in.
The south coast runs a few degrees warmer than the north right through the month, which is worth knowing if swimming is the point of the trip rather than a bonus.
CRETAquarium at Gournes keeps its summer hours of 09:30 to 19:00 until 31 October, switching to 09:30 to 16:00 from 1 November. Half term lands just inside the long days, which is a genuinely useful piece of timing — you can go late afternoon and still have two hours.
The archaeological sites. Knossos, Phaistos, Malia and the museums stay open year-round on winter hours. Late October is the best time of year to visit any of them: the same ruins, a third of the people, and no one fainting in a queue.
The towns. Chania and Rethymno old towns are working towns, not resorts. They do not shut. Tavernas, harbours, the markets and the backstreets all carry on, and they are considerably more pleasant in October than in August.
The mountains and gorges. Cooler weather makes walking possible again rather than punishing, though check gorge opening status before setting out — some close for the season or after heavy rain.
This is the part that catches families out.
Water parks and resort pools. Most seasonal water parks and a lot of hotel pool complexes close at the end of the season, and "end of season" in Crete generally means late October, sometimes earlier. Some properties wind down facilities well before they close their doors.
Kids' clubs and animation programmes. These usually stop before the hotel does.
Boat trips and much of the excursion market. Reduced schedules, then nothing.
Whole resort strips. Some of the purpose-built resort areas genuinely empty out — shuttered bars, quiet streets, and a strange out-of-season stillness that adults sometimes love and children usually do not.
Nothing here is a fixed date I can give you, because it varies by business and by year and anyone who tells you otherwise is guessing. Email the specific property and ask what will actually be open during your dates. Not the brochure. The property.
The one evening that cannot shut for the winter is the one that comes to you — we bring a private cinema to your villa terrace, covered properly at the end of this piece. Or skip straight to your dates.
If your children's idea of a holiday is a water park, a kids' club and a lifeguarded pool with other children in it, do not book Crete for October half term. You will arrive to find the thing they were promised has closed for the winter, and no amount of Minoan pottery will fix that.
Go to the Canaries, where the season genuinely runs year-round, and come to Crete in June instead.
Crete in late October is a different holiday: swimming, ruins, mountain villages, long lunches, empty beaches. It suits children who will get in the sea and walk round a palace. It does not suit children who need to be entertained by the resort. You know which you have.
For families who are coming, the Gouves and Heraklion coast guide covers the practical end — that short airport transfer matters even more in a week this short.
The full moon falls on 26 October 2026, the Monday of half term. A bright moon is the wrong night for stargazing but a very good one for a late swim or a walk without a torch, and our full moon calendar explains why.
If you want an evening at the villa that does not depend on anything being open, we bring a 200-inch open-air cinema to your terrace — Family Movie Night is €450 for four guests, additional guests €60 each, set up from around six and packed away by midnight. Bring blankets in late October; the evenings turn once the sun goes. All we need is one standard power socket, and we carry a 20-metre cable so the screen goes where the view is.
When you know your dates, tell us about your evening and I will come back to you personally.
