Crete's South Coast: Warmer, Emptier, Harder to Reach

Cross the mountains and Crete becomes a different island. The south coast is drier, emptier, a couple of degrees warmer and considerably harder to get to, and for about six weeks in autumn it is the best place on the island to be.

It also contains the one village we have to say no to. More on that below.

Why the south is the autumn coast

The White Mountains and the Psiloritis range run along the spine of the island and take most of the weather out of the northerlies. The result is a southern strip that stays warmer later into the year and sees less rain than Heraklion or Chania.

For scale: the north coast averages a daytime high of about 24°C in October with a night low near 17.5°C. The south typically runs a degree or two above that, and the sea holds around 23°C well into the month. Figures vary by source and by year, so treat them as a shape rather than a forecast — but the direction is consistent, and it is why Cretans themselves head south in late September.

The villages, briefly

Plakias is the one with a proper beach and enough tavernas to feel like a resort without being one. Good base if you want to swim and not think.

Agia Galini is a steep little harbour town, prettier from the water than from the road, and the most obviously touristic of the four.

Chora Sfakion is a working harbour with a strip of fish tavernas and a serious reputation — this is Sfakia, the least conquered corner of Crete, and the birthplace of the sfakianopita. It is also the ferry hub for everything west of it.

Loutro is the one people fall in love with. A white crescent of buildings around a small bay, no cars, no road.

Loutro has no road. None.

This is not "a difficult road" or "four-wheel drive recommended". There is no road at all. You reach Loutro by the Anendyk ferry from Chora Sfakion, a crossing of about fifteen to twenty minutes, by taxi-boat, or on foot along the coastal path in an hour and a half to two hours.

That is the entire reason it is still lovely. Everything in Loutro — every crate of beer, every mattress, every bag of cement — arrived on a boat.

Which means we cannot come to Loutro

Worth stating plainly rather than letting someone find out at the enquiry stage.

We arrive with a screen, sound, seating and a considerable amount of cable, in a vehicle. There is no vehicle route to Loutro, and a boat crossing plus a walk along a footpath is not a setup we can do properly or safely. If you are staying there, we are not your answer — and the honest truth is that Loutro at nine in the evening, with the lamps on the water and nothing to do, does not need us anyway.

Sweetwater and Marmara beaches nearby are in the same category: taxi-boat or footpath only.

The drive takes longer than the map suggests

Chania to Chora Sfakion is 72km, which sounds like an hour. Allow an hour and a half. The road runs inland through Vryses and up over the Askifou plateau before dropping to the sea in a series of switchbacks with very large views, and it is fully paved and perfectly good — but it is not a road you hurry, and if anyone in the car dislikes heights, take the final descent slowly.

The consequence for planning: do not try to base yourself on the south coast and keep an evening in Chania old town in the diary. That is three hours of mountain driving in the dark for dinner. Pick a side. We made the same argument about Elounda and the far east, and about choosing between Chania, Rethymno and Elounda in the first place.

The ferry season ends sooner than you think

The south coast ferries run roughly April to October. Outside that it drops to a skeleton service that can stop altogether for a week when the sea is up. Even in season the timetable changes suddenly and often, so check it the day before rather than the week before, and pay particular attention to the last boat back.

If your plan depends on a specific sailing, have a plan that survives it not running.

All we need is one mains socket — we bring a twenty-metre extension cable, so the screen goes where the view is rather than where the plug is. Setup around six, collection at midnight.
