Chania, Rethymno or Elounda: Where Should You Book Your Crete Villa?

Crete is not one destination. It's a 250-kilometre island with three airports, four distinct coasts and villa regions that feel like different countries. Book the wrong corner for your kind of holiday and you'll spend it in the car. Here's the honest map.

Chania & the west: romance and drama

The west is the postcard: the Venetian harbour, pastel old-town lanes, and the wild beaches of Balos, Falassarna and Elafonisi within striking distance. Book here if your holiday is built around golden-hour dinners, dramatic sunsets and old-town wandering.

Where the villas are: the sweet spot is not the city but Apokoronas, twenty minutes east — stone villages like Vamos and Gavalochori, and the gentle beach towns of Almyrida and Kalyves. Big gardens, White Mountain views, real village life. On the other side, the Akrotiri peninsula offers quiet villas surprisingly close to both airport and old town. Best for: couples, proposals, food-led holidays, first-time visitors.

Rethymno & the centre: the balanced choice

Rethymno gets overlooked between its louder neighbours, which is exactly its charm. The old town is smaller and quieter than Chania's, the beach is long and sandy, and — the practical magic — you're 45 minutes from Chania and an hour from Heraklion, so the whole island opens up.

Where the villas are: the hills behind the town and the villages towards Georgioupolis — olive-grove country with sea views and some of the island's best-value luxury.

Best for: families who want to see everything, longer stays, mixed groups of couples and kids.

Heraklion & the east: polish and ease

East of the capital, the coast from Gouves through Chersonissos is Crete's family engine room — flat sandy beaches, waterparks, the aquarium, and villa complexes designed around children. Push further east and the mood changes entirely: Elounda is the island's five-star address, all infinity pools, spa hotels and yacht views over Mirabello Bay, with Agios Nikolaos providing the town buzz.

Where the villas are: garden villas in Gouves and Anissaras for families; showpiece hillside villas around Elounda and Plaka for the once-a-decade trip.

Best for: families with younger children (Gouves), honeymoons and milestone holidays (Elounda).

The one-question test

Ask your group: what does the perfect evening look like? If the answer is a harbour dinner and a wander — go west. If it's "a bit of everything without long drives" — Rethymno. If it's kids asleep by ten after a day in the pool — Gouves. If it's champagne over a bay that looks lit by a film crew — Elounda.
