First Villa Holiday in Crete? 12 Things Nobody Tells You

Villa listings are honest about the things that photograph well. The pool is the pool. The view is usually the view. What they cannot tell you is how the week actually runs — and a first villa holiday in Crete has a particular set of surprises that a hotel holiday does not.

Here are twelve, roughly in the order they will happen to you.

Before you book

1. A "sea view" and a sea view are different things. Ask for a photograph taken from the terrace, not from the roof or the far corner of the garden. Reputable owners send one without fuss. The ones who send you the same brochure shot again have told you something.

2. Distances on a map mean very little here. Crete is long, mountainous, and its roads wind. Sixty kilometres can be ninety minutes. Before you fall in love with a villa, put its location and the two or three places you most want to visit into a route planner and look at the times, not the distances.

3. Check what the air conditioning actually costs. Many villas meter it, run it on timers, or have it in the bedrooms only. This is entirely normal and rarely hidden — but it is also rarely volunteered, and in August it matters.

4. Ask about the road in. A surprising number of beautiful Cretan villas sit at the end of a steep, unmade track. It is usually fine. It is much less fine in the smallest hire car available, at night, with a full boot.

Arriving

5. Take the excess insurance on the hire car, or check your own policy properly. Cretan roads are narrow, parking is tight, and stone walls are everywhere. This is the single most common holiday expense that people did not budget for.

6. Learn the hard-shoulder thing in the first ten minutes. On single-carriageway roads, slower drivers pull onto the wide shoulder to let faster traffic overtake down the middle. It feels alarming and is completely normal. Do it yourself and you will stop collecting a queue.

7. Do one big shop on day one, near a town. Village shops are lovely and will not have everything. The large supermarkets are on the approach roads to Chania, Rethymno and Heraklion, and one proper trip beats four small frustrated ones.

8. The paper goes in the bin. Cretan plumbing is narrow and old in most places, and every villa will have a bin beside the loo for a reason. Everyone finds this odd for about a day.

The rhythm of the week

9. Nothing important happens between one and five. The heat in July and August is genuinely serious in the middle of the day. Locals work around it and so should you: early mornings, long afternoons at the villa, and the day resumes around six.

10. Dinner is at nine. If you turn up at seven you will get a table immediately and eat alone, which tells you everything. Shift the whole day later and the holiday improves.

11. The wind is a real factor in July and August. The meltemi blows hard from the north, mostly during the day, and it can put a stop to boat trips and make north-facing beaches unpleasant. It usually drops at sunset. Build flexibility into anything on the water.

And the one people always get wrong

12. Nobody plans the evenings.

Every first villa holiday is planned as a series of days — this beach, that gorge, the old town on Thursday. The evenings are assumed to look after themselves, and for the first three they do. Then it becomes: get back, everyone showers, someone suggests going out, someone else does not want to drive, and by day five the group has quietly split into people on their phones and people on the terrace.

This is the thing that separates a good villa holiday from a great one, and it costs nothing to fix. Give two or three of the evenings a shape before you fly. A long cooking night. A proper card tournament with a stupid trophy. One night where somebody has planned something and everybody turns up.

You took a villa so that you could all be in the same place. It is worth spending a little thought on the hours when you actually are.
