Fire Pit or Blankets? Autumn Cinema Nights in Crete

From about the middle of September the same question starts arriving: won't it be too cold?

Almost always, no. But the honest answer has a date attached, and the useful part is knowing which week the answer changes — because before that week you should not spend a euro on keeping warm, and after it you probably should.

What the numbers actually say

North coast averages, Heraklion, in Celsius. The south coast runs a degree or two warmer and Chania is broadly similar.

Averages, so a given evening can sit either side of them, and sources vary by a degree depending on the years they average.

The low is not the number you feel

Worth being precise about this, because it is where people talk themselves out of a perfectly good evening. That "night low" is the overnight minimum, and it usually arrives shortly before dawn. At nine or ten in the evening — which is when you are actually sitting outside watching something — you are typically a couple of degrees above it, with the terrace still giving back the heat it absorbed all afternoon.

So a September evening is genuinely warm. An October evening is jumper weather, not coat weather. November is the first month where sitting still outdoors for two hours needs thinking about.

Wind matters more than temperature

A still 17°C evening is comfortable. A breezy 20°C one is not, because moving air strips heat off you far faster than still air of the same temperature. The meltemi that blows through July and August has usually eased by late September, which is part of why the shoulder season is quietly the best time of year for this — warm enough, and calm.

If your terrace is exposed to the north, that matters more than the month on the calendar. A screen tucked against a wall on a breezy night beats an open lawn every time.

What to book, and when not to

Through September: nothing. Do not buy the fire pit, do not buy the blankets. You will not use them, and you would be spending €130 on props. This is the single most common thing we would talk someone out of.

From about mid-October: the wool blankets, €90. These do the heavy lifting, and the reason is unglamorous — a blanket keeps your own heat next to you, which is a far more efficient way of being warm than trying to raise the temperature of an open terrace.

Late October into November: blankets plus the fire pit, €40. The fire pit earns its place here, though be clear-eyed about what it does. An open fire radiates heat directionally: whichever side of you faces it gets warm and the other side does not. It is atmosphere and a focal point as much as it is heating, and it is very good at both. What it cannot do is warm the air around you — nothing outdoors can, patio heaters included, which is why they underwhelm so often.

If you want the evening to smell of something other than woodsmoke, the herbal ambiance add-on is €35 and works better in autumn than in high summer, when everything is already scented.

The damp catches people out more than the cold

The genuine autumn nuisance is not temperature, it is dew. From mid-October onwards, cushions, rugs and anything soft left out from the afternoon will be faintly damp by nine o'clock. It is easily solved by bringing them out late rather than early, but if nobody warns you, the first ten minutes of your evening involve everyone standing up again.

Dark also arrives much earlier than people expect once the clocks change on 25 October — from that Monday you are properly dark by half five, which we set out in more detail in our guide to Elounda and Agios Nikolaos after dark. An early start is not a worse evening; it just means dinner comes after the film rather than before.

The short version
