Which Cinema Night Add-Ons Are Actually Worth It

There is a moment near the end of booking an evening when a list of optional extras appears and you have to decide, with very little information, which of them you actually want. Everything sounds nice. Everything costs something. And the person selling them to you has an obvious reason to say yes to all of it.

So here is the opposite of that. This is our own add-on list, ranked honestly, including the ones we would tell you to leave off.

Worth it almost every time

Personalised intro slide — €25. The cheapest thing we sell and the one that gets the biggest reaction. A message on the screen before the film starts: a name, a birthday, an anniversary, an inside joke nobody else in the garden will understand. It costs less than a round of drinks and it is the bit people photograph. If you take one thing off this page, take this.

Popcorn machine — €50. With children, this is not really optional. The machine itself is half the entertainment — the noise, the smell, the queue — and it runs all evening rather than producing one bowl. Without children, it is pleasant but skippable.

Fire pit and heaters — €40. From late September onwards, buy it. Cretan evenings turn faster than visitors expect once the season tips, and the difference between a group that stays until the credits and one that drifts indoors at the ninety-minute mark is usually temperature. In July and August, obviously not.

Worth it if it fits your group

Silent cinema headphones — €120. This one is either essential or pointless, with very little in between. Essential if you have a wide age range and want the teenagers watching one thing while the small ones watch another, or if the villa is close enough to neighbours that volume is a genuine concern. Pointless if you are six adults watching one film.

The food. We do a grazing board at €45, a larger Cretan feast board at €85, and a wine pairing at €65. The honest guidance: if you have already eaten, the small board is plenty and the large one goes to waste. If the cinema evening is dinner, take the feast board and skip a restaurant. Do not buy both boards.

Illuminated letters — €60. Terrific for a birthday or a proposal, where the word means something. Slightly odd on an ordinary Tuesday.

Fairy lights — €55. Worth it if your terrace is bare. If the villa already has festoon lighting or good planting — which many Cretan villas do — you are paying to gild something that is already lovely. Send us a photograph of the space and we will tell you honestly which it is.

Only for the big moments

Photographer, one hour — €399. For a proposal, this is not an add-on, it is the point. You get one attempt at that ten minutes and no second chance, and phone footage from a hiding relative is not the same thing. For a family movie night, it is a great deal of money for photographs of people eating popcorn.

Luxury floral arrangement — €95. Same logic. Proposals and anniversaries yes; a Wednesday with the children, no.

Champagne upgrade — €35. A small price for a real difference on an occasion. On a normal night the prosecco is genuinely good and nobody has ever complained.

The ones we would skip

Cretan herbal ambiance — €35. Wild herbs and oils scenting the seating area. It is lovely, and it is the single most skippable thing on our list. You are in Crete, outdoors, in the evening. The air already smells of wild herbs for free.

Cretan wool blankets — €90. Not because they are bad — they are handwoven and yours to keep — but because they are a souvenir rather than an add-on, and it is worth deciding which of those you are buying. Blankets are included with every package anyway. This is the keeping them that costs €90.

The rule of thumb

If an add-on changes what the evening is, it is usually worth it. If it only makes it slightly nicer, it usually is not.

The intro slide changes the evening — it makes it about a person. The headphones change it, if you have a fourteen-year-old and a six-year-old. The fire pit changes it in October. The herb oils do not change anything.

And a point that will cost us money to make: most of our evenings are booked with two or three add-ons, not eight. A Family Movie Night at €450 with the intro slide and the popcorn machine is €525 and is a genuinely complete evening. You do not need to spend more than that to have the night you are imagining.
