10 Proposal Film Montage Ideas (And How to Make One)

Ten proposal montage ideas that actually land, how to get the file to play on the night — and why ninety seconds beats the eleven-minute epic you were planning.

Of everything people ask us to arrange for a proposal, the film montage is the most requested and the most over-built. Somebody spends three weeks assembling eleven minutes of footage, then watches the person they love glance away at minute four.

So: ideas that work, and an argument for making something far shorter than you were planning.

First, what we actually provide

Worth being precise, because people assume more than we offer. Our personalised intro slide is €25 — a title card: your names, a date, a line of your choosing, on screen before the film starts. It is the single thing guests photograph most.

It is not a montage. If you want one, you make it and we play it — not to be unhelpful, but because nobody should be editing your photographs except you.

How long it should be

The professional guidance for a wedding slideshow is four to six minutes, with a hard cap around seven — roughly sixty to ninety photographs at about four seconds each, carried by two or three songs. The reasoning is blunt and correct: a room will give you their full attention for about the length of one great song.

A proposal is not a wedding reception, and the maths changes.

Aim for ninety seconds to two minutes. Twenty to thirty images. One song. The montage is not the event — it is what makes the room go quiet before the event. Every second past two minutes is one she spends wondering whether something is happening.

Ten ideas that actually land

The map trace. Every place you have been together, in order, with the photograph from each. Ends on where you are standing.

Chronological, worst photos first. Start with the badly-lit phone pictures from the first months. The improvement in the photography over the years does emotional work no caption can.

Voice notes. Ask six people for fifteen seconds each. Play them over stills. Hearing her mother's voice unexpectedly is more powerful than any transition effect.

The same pose, different places. If you have accidentally taken the same photograph in nine countries, you already have your montage.

The first message. A screenshot of the opening exchange, held on screen long enough to read. It is almost always funnier and more awkward than either of you remembers.

A countdown of reasons. Ten to one, one line each, plain text on black. Restraint reads as sincerity here.

Handwriting. Photograph notes, cards, the back of a receipt you kept. Handwriting carries a person in a way a photograph of their face somehow does not.

The dog. If there is a dog, the dog is in the montage. This is not negotiable.

Footage from this trip. Film small things across the week — coffee, the drive, her laughing at something on a Tuesday. Cut it in at the end so the montage catches up to the present moment and stops.

A title card in the style of a film. Then the real title card is ours, and the two land together.

Making it, practically

Almost anyone can build this on a phone. CapCut, iMovie and Canva all do it, and the choice matters far less than your restraint with transitions.

Export as MP4, 1080p. Higher resolution gains you nothing on a screen viewed from six metres and only risks playback problems.

Then get it to us in one of three ways. A USB stick is the most reliable: our projector has a USB-A port, and Nebula's own guidance is that if a drive is not recognised, formatting it as FAT32 fixes it. Playing from USB needs a file manager and video player installed on the projector, which we handle in advance — so tell us at booking, not on the night. HDMI from your laptop works and bypasses all of that; there is one HDMI input, so it is either your laptop or nothing else. Or cast it — the projector supports Google Cast and AirPlay, which is the easiest option and the one most dependent on the villa's wifi being decent.

Whichever you choose, test it with us beforehand. A montage that will not play is worse than no montage at all.

The bit where I talk you out of it

If you are proposing to someone private — someone who dislikes being the centre of attention, who finds public gestures uncomfortable — skip the montage entirely. Take the title card, take the sunset, ask the question. The montage is a performance, and performances are wonderful for people who enjoy being performed to and quietly awful for people who do not.

You know which one you are proposing to. Believe yourself.

If you are still planning the evening around it, the month-by-month sunset guide tells you exactly when the light goes, and what a proposal in Greece actually costs sets the rest of the budget.

When you know your date, tell us about your evening — mention the montage and I will make sure the projector is ready for it.
