You get one attempt at the moment and no second take. Here is what a proposal photographer in Crete actually costs, the one question that matters more than the portfolio, and the times we would tell you not to bother.
The argument for hiring a photographer for a proposal is short and hard to counter. The moment lasts about ninety seconds, you get one attempt, and the alternative is a cousin behind a wall with a phone held vertically.
The argument against is also short: it is a lot of money for ninety seconds, and a badly chosen photographer can ruin the thing they were hired to capture.
So here is what it costs, how to pick one, and when we would tell you to skip it.
The international booking platforms publish their rates, which makes them a useful floor to reason from. Localgrapher's Crete packages run roughly like this — they are priced in US dollars, so the euro figures move a little with the exchange rate:
| Package | Time | Edited photos | Approx. |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bronze | 30 minutes | 20 | €255 |
| Silver | 60 minutes | 35 | €355 |
| Gold | 100 minutes | 60 | €500 |
| Platinum | 120 minutes | 75 | €575 |
Independent Cretan photographers price differently and more variably. Some charge less than the platforms because there is no commission in the middle; the well-known wedding photographers charge considerably more, because a proposal slot displaces part of a wedding day in peak season. If you are quoted under about €200 for an hour in August, ask carefully what you are actually getting.
For reference, our own photographer add-on is €399 for the first hour, which sits deliberately in the middle of that range.
The hour matters more than the number of photos. Twenty images from someone who was in the right place beat seventy-five from someone who was not.
Everybody looks at the portfolio first. It tells you less than you think, because a beautiful portfolio of couples posing at golden hour proves someone can direct a shoot — which is the opposite of the skill you need.
The question to ask is: how will you stay hidden, and what lens will you use?
A proposal photographer's real job in the first ninety seconds is to be invisible. That means shooting from distance with a long lens — something in the 70–200mm range — from behind cover, without a flash, without moving into sightlines, and without the tell-tale approach that makes your partner turn round two seconds early. Anyone who cannot answer that question specifically has not done many proposals, whatever their wedding work looks like.
Ask to see proposal work specifically. Not engagement portraits, which are posed afterwards. The actual moment, shot from a distance, with two people who did not know a camera was there.
What is the signal? You need an agreed, invisible cue — taking off a hat, moving to a particular spot. Agree it in advance and rehearse it in your head.
When will you be in position? The answer should be well before you are. A photographer arriving at the same time as you is a photographer your partner will notice.
What is the plan if the spot is occupied? Crete's best viewpoints in August have other people at them. A good photographer will have scouted a second angle.
What happens after? This is where most of the value actually sits. The first ninety seconds are the ones you cannot re-do, but the twenty minutes afterwards — when your partner has said yes and neither of you can stop grinning — produce the photographs you will actually frame. Make sure the booking covers both.
Everything hangs off the light, and the useful window is shorter than people assume — about half an hour between sunset and the light properly going. We have written the month-by-month sunset table for Crete precisely so you can work the whole evening backwards from it. Give your photographer that table too; the good ones will already know, but it saves a conversation.
Also worth knowing: some archaeological sites and protected areas in Greece restrict commercial photography or require a permit. If your chosen spot is a monument rather than a beach or a terrace, ask your photographer whether it is allowed — they will know, and it is a bad thing to discover on the day.
If you are proposing indoors at a busy restaurant. There is nowhere to hide, the light is bad, and the photographs will look like the photographs.
If one of you genuinely hates being photographed. A proposal is not the moment to discover how much. You will both remember it perfectly well.
If the budget is tight and it is a choice between the photographer and the evening itself. Take the evening. A modest proposal you both enjoyed beats an expensively documented one that felt like a production.
We say that as the people selling the photographer.
The thing nobody plans is what happens at eight o'clock, when the photographs are taken, the champagne is drunk, and you are standing on a headland in the dark with nowhere to go.
That is the gap our Proposal package is built around — the styling set up in advance and out of sight, the moment, and then an evening that continues rather than stopping: a cinema under the stars on your own terrace, your film, nobody else there. The photographer covers the first hour of it.
If you are still deciding where, we have ranked the best places to propose in Crete by privacy. And when you have a date, tell us — we will work the whole evening backwards from the sunset time and tell you honestly whether it hangs together.
Prices above were accurate at the time of writing and are indicative only. Always confirm directly with the photographer.
