What If It Rains on Your Proposal?

The actual odds month by month, why wind is the likelier problem than rain, what our weather policy really means — and the three situations where you should not book an outdoor proposal at all.

It is the second question everyone asks, straight after the price. And underneath it is not really a question about weather — it is the fear of the plan collapsing in front of the person you are about to propose to.

So here are the actual odds, our actual policy, and the one situation in which you should not book an outdoor proposal at all.

The odds are better than you think

Heraklion averages, and the numbers are worth reading twice:

MonthRainfallRain daysRough odds on any given night
June–August0 mm0Effectively nil
September10 mm2About 1 in 14
October45 mm4About 1 in 8
November60 mm6About 1 in 5

Two things jump out. June to August is genuinely dry — not "usually fine", but zero recorded rainfall. And September's entire month brings ten millimetres, spread across two days. That is not weather; that is a shower.

Then October arrives and rainfall quadruples. The line between "safe bet" and "have a plan" falls somewhere around the first week of October, and averages hide bad years, so treat these as odds rather than promises.

Wind is the likelier problem

Nobody worries about wind and they should. The meltemi blows from the northwest from about mid-May to mid-September, and while it makes the heat bearable it also makes an exposed headland at eight in the evening genuinely unpleasant — and a projection screen is, structurally speaking, a sail.

A calm 18°C evening is lovely. A blowy 24°C one is not. If your chosen spot faces north and is unsheltered, that matters more than the rain column above. We would rather set up against a wall on the leeward side with a slightly worse view than on the perfect terrace in a crosswind.

What we actually do about it

The policy is short, and it is the same whether you have booked The Proposal at €1,250 or the smallest evening we do.

We make the call together by 16:00 on the day. Not at seven when the equipment is already out and you have a ring in your pocket — at four, in daylight, when there is still time to do something else with the evening. If it is off, you move to another night of your stay at no cost. If no other night works, you get a full refund.

We do not take a deposit and then hope for the best. There is no version of this where you are arguing about money at nine o'clock on a wet Tuesday.

The real answer: do not propose on your last night

This is the single most useful thing on this page, and it is free.

If you propose on the last evening of the trip, you have one attempt and no fallback. If you propose on night two or three, you have four spare evenings, and a 1-in-8 October night becomes a near-certainty across five chances. The maths is entirely on your side the moment you stop putting the whole plan on one date.

It has a second benefit nobody mentions: you then get to spend the rest of the holiday engaged, rather than spending it quietly rehearsing. We have said much the same in our guide to planning a proposal in Crete, and there is a month-by-month sunset timing guide worth two minutes if you are choosing dates.

When you should not book one at all

Three cases, and we would tell you the same on the phone.

You have one night in Crete and the date cannot move. A cruise stop, a wedding you are attending, a flight home the next morning. With no spare evening, an outdoor plan is a coin toss you do not need to take. Book a restaurant with a view, propose there, and do the cinema evening on a future trip.

The date is non-negotiable and it is in November or later. One night in five, plus early dark and cooler evenings. Possible, but you are buying stress.

There is genuinely no indoor fallback at your villa and you would be devastated rather than amused if it moved. Some people find the improvised version funnier and better than the plan. If you are not one of them, know that about yourself before you book.

What a fallback actually looks like

For the record, it is rarely a disaster. A covered terrace works. A large room with a plain wall works. The screen and sound do not care whether they are outdoors, and a proposal indoors with rain on the windows is not a lesser thing — it is just a different photograph.

If you want to talk through your dates and whether they leave you room to move, tell us what you are planning. If the honest answer is that your plan is too tight, we will say so before you pay us anything.
