Where to base yourself in Crete for a honeymoon, why autumn quietly beats August, and the order to book things in — including the one night you should not book an outdoor cinema.
Most people plan a Crete honeymoon in the wrong order. They pick the hotel first, because the hotel is the thing with photographs, and then they arrange everything else around a decision made from a website in February. It usually works out. It rarely works out as well as it could have.
Crete is 260 kilometres end to end. That is the single fact most honeymoon plans are built without.
Peak season is July and August, and it is hot, crowded and expensive. The people who know the island tend to name September and May as the best months, and the numbers back them up.
| Month | North coast highs | South coast highs | Sea | Rainy days (north) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| September | 24–30°C | 26–32°C | 25–26°C | around 2 |
| October | 19–25°C | 22–27°C | 23–24°C | around 6 |
| November | 15–20°C | 17–22°C | around 20°C | around 8 |
Two things jump out. The first is that the sea in October is still warmer than the Mediterranean average for most of the summer — Crete's water holds its heat long after the crowds have gone. The second is that the south coast runs several degrees warmer than the north, right through autumn. If you are travelling in late October and want to swim rather than merely look at the sea, that difference decides where you stay.
Figures vary a little between sources and between years, so treat them as the shape of the season rather than a forecast. But the shape is consistent: September is the sweet spot, October is the island's best-kept secret, and by November the evenings have genuinely turned.
Elounda is the luxury answer, and it is a real one — resorts with private pools, sea views and spas, built for couples who want to arrive and stop. If your idea of a honeymoon is not leaving the property much, this is where to spend the money.
Chania is the most romantic town on the island, and the Venetian old town after dark is the reason. Boutique hotels in restored stone houses, a harbour that empties of day-trippers by nine, backstreets that reward getting lost. Better for couples who want to walk somewhere for dinner than for couples who want a sun lounger.
Rethymno is the quiet compromise — old-town character with a long sandy beach attached, so you can have both without needing the car every day.
Apokoronas, inland from Chania, is where the villa people go: olive terraces, stone houses with private pools, the White Mountains behind you. Not a resort, not a town. If you want a house rather than a hotel, start here — we've written a full guide to the region.
Heraklion is for Knossos, the archaeological museum and the airport. It is a fine day. It is not a honeymoon base.
If you are torn between the north-coast towns, our longer comparison of Chania, Rethymno and Elounda goes deeper.
We bring a private open-air cinema to your villa, terrace or beach — a 200-inch screen, cinema sound, styled and hosted, set up around six and gone by midnight. Starlight for Two is €690. It is, I think, one of the better evenings available on this island.
It is also the wrong thing to book on your first night, and I would rather say so than take the booking.
Night one you are tired, you have flown, you have not yet worked out where the light switches are, and you almost certainly want dinner and bed. Give it to night three, four or five — once you have settled, once you have seen a sunset, once the holiday has actually started. It lands completely differently.
And if you are only in Crete for three nights, skip it altogether. Three nights is barely enough for the island itself. Spend them at a table by the water instead. We'll still be here next time.
If you're planning something bigger than a film — a proposal on the trip, say — the month-by-month sunset guide tells you exactly what time the light goes, which matters more than most people expect.
When you know your dates, tell us about your evening and I'll come back to you personally with what's possible where you're staying.
